National Family Planning Board Library

The Board maintains a staffed special library where the public and members of staff can access information pertaining to reproductive health and other issues such as child abuse, teenage pregnancy, maternal and child health, drug abuse, puberty, menstruation, parenting and family planning options. Information can be accessed from the various books, journals and other publications that are located in the Library at our Sylvan Road address. Youth of all ages, Guidance Counsellors, health practitioners, among other persons are invited to come in to our library at their leisure to conduct research or to learn more about reproductive health matters. The library is opened to the public Mondays to Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Marge-Roper Counselling Service

The NFPB offers a call-in, walk-in and write-in counselling service managed by a trained nurse/counsellor at our office on Sylvan Avenue. The Counselling Service targets persons in the reproductive age group, providing them with easy access to information and counselling on Family Planning and Family Life Education (FP/FLE) issues.   Persons wishing a private, confidential and personal session with the counsellor can just walk into the office as well from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Persons who wish to remain anonymous can access the service by calling the numbers: 968-1619, 968-1634-35.   The counsellor also maintains a referral system with appropriate agencies within the country, in order to cater to the needs of clients that the NFPB counselling service cannot address. Referrals are made for the following services – antenatal care, receipt of contraceptives not issued at the NFPB, contraceptive counselling at special youth-friendly clinics, Sexually Transmitted Infection/HIV counselling and testing, general counselling, child welfare, skills training/education, domestic violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse and other services.

“Ask Marge” Radio Programme

The NFPB also provides outreach services through the media, via the “Ask Marge” radio programme aired on RJR at 9:40 am on Tuesdays. On this programme, areas of Reproductive Health are discussed by the Family Planning Counsellor.

Marge Roper Column

The NFPB’s Family Planning Counsellor also has a “Marge Roper column” which comes out in the Jamaica Star every two weeks (fortnight) on a Friday. Through this column, the Family Planning Counsellor is able to answer questions that clients may have based on letters that she received, as well as discuss other Reproductive Health issues that are of importance to clients.

Presentations/Rap Sessions

From time-to-time, the training officers as well as the Family Planning Counsellor are invited to visit schools, centres, and other corporate organisations to give presentations or rap sessions on Sexual and Reproductive Health issues.
